Ultimately it may have been a "right place right time" situation. At is essence pre-2014 Minecraft was still a small (in team and scope) indie that just happened to hit it big during a time when online content creation was really just beginning to become a mainstream thing.
I agree that it isn't some masterpiece of game design, but I like it for its simple core (break thing, make thing, place thing) and it is nice to set up a server eberry year or two with a few friends to detective around on for a couple of weeks.
