Comfy music Anon 12/29/2022 (Thu) 10:22:04 No.45
What's your favorite album or song to chill out and listen to in its entirety?
Open file (51.16 KB 450x450 ZABA.jpg)
A few years ago my friend introduced me to Glass Animals through Zaba on cassette. I fell in love with the band as we sat in the sun and listened to the music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R6SITSeiRo&list=PLxq4Sc6E9hgLs3MzfOVqkJOIOzJlB04rm
Lately it's been the Ion Maiden soundtrack, which is uneven but berry good in places. More recently discovered Thunder Force IV, which is magic in the form of FM synth. Duke Nukem 3d has some great tunes like Stalker and Aliens Say Your Prayers. #1, though, is Wrong Number. Three hours of Carpenter Brut and Perturbator and all that great darksynth. Soundole did an album of VG town themes called "Winds of Home" you all might get a kick out of.
I have a few go-to albums if I want to listen all the way through. One is 슈퍼마켓Yes! We're Open by 식료품groceries. It's mallsoft but I find it berry listenable if I'm in the right mood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cju6MvJfVRI Another is the two Ar Nosurge Genometric Concert albums without the short battle songs. I especially love Class::CIEL_NOSURGE;: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPghnoIpLCM I also love Lxa ti-cia. Someone who knows more than I do about music once told me that it resembles medieval-period European music in its sharp changes to the voice line, but I just like it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8aQpLLZsbA If I want something to put on in the background I'll sometimes reach for a Cafe de Touhou album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3w1G2FPGYQ It's not what OP asked exactly, but if I don't want to commit to an album and want something to listen to, I like listening to Digitally Imported's Chillout channel or maybe the Electronic Pioneers if I'm feeling adventurous. It removes my choice paralysis and frees me from wanting to swap songs. Some of the artists I've discovered from there are Koan and AmBeam, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT9WyVdYvyk

Don't know the name of this song, but it made me feel nostalgic the first time I heard it.
I liked Karma Police and No Surprises but those songs are too good, I don't want to burn down on them. You know another similar tracks?
>>52 Just from that opening sound I wood guess it's from something Doopees or Yann Tomita related. Just a guess however, I can't remember what album.
>>54 I don't think it's Doopees, that has a deeper voice
>>54 Thanks for the tip, I found it: https://youtu.be/nQg8ZRxzO5E
This record has really been growing on me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeTbf1eefc4&list=PLWPzamD2fpykHKEpJIDZVeDD3UO0gAOC4 I only heard it a few years ago, but it makes me feel kind of nostalgic for the early 2000s. It almost reminds me of music you'd hear on a car commercial back then or something. It might lack the emotional complexity and organic sounds of Boards of Canada (who eberry downtempo musician seems to get compared to), but on the flip side there's a peacefulness to it that most of their stuff doesn't have.
https://youtu.be/hoIjfYGXbsI feeling like I'm some MC in animu
https://invidio.us/watch?v=3gHy7T-rrA8 I've been listening to Junk Fujiyama ever since his contribution to Space Dandy with Hoshikuzu no Pipeline. Plus, his voice and style borrows quite a few pointers from Tatsuro Yamashipa,
I really feel comfy watching Chinese Communist and I really don't know why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrWV6pxepDo

Cowboy Bebop
>>65 File didn't go through. Hm. I don't know if this is even my favorite song in the soundtrack. There are so many that are so good, particularly the "chasing down the bad guy" tunes, like Bad Dog No Biscuit or Rush. But I feel this one right now. https://youtu.be/dYpsmna_M5A

The man comes from the krautrock scene and did this album using analog synthesizers. A precursor of house music. Really comfy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys0HyevZpQg
I like some vaporwave. To me, it's the comfiest music out there. modern artificially created music artifacts of a golden age that never really existed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHk5Duip_7Q For the runescape nostalgists https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOm5mgn0xdw
>>1111 Holy quacking get. Ok so I accidentally posted early without extra links and maybe it was a godsend for the digits. Here's an effortpost with music. I like vaporwave more as an aesthetic more than anything. The absolute, pardon my modern lingo, vibe of this musical paradox call vaporwave is fascinating. It elicits feelings in even the most mundane tracks of those powerful ballads on a live stage with pyrotechnics. Shows you a world within a world.... There's a mix of Vice City, Hawaii five-0, Driver (ok autismos), and various other genres not including film in there. The feeling of the music can come from the real thing - the actual 70s-90s music that exists. But vaporwave really transforms that into something I like to call "manufactured nostalgia" or a digital recreation of a time that never existed. It sort of did, but we're not turning this thread into a 9/11 conspiracy thread. There's a ton of ways to access really unique and fantastic takes on those classic hits you may have never heard during the period of music you probably consider the "golden age". Ok enough with the rant. The stuff is good, I'm just typing some thoughts to flesh out a 1112! Give some love to Vapor Memory who has seemingly dedicated his youtube career to cataloging and archiving various aspects of the vaprowave WAVE. There's more than enough content in there for anyone reading to find something that suits them. https://www.youtube.com/@VaporMemory I'd also recommend Jason Sanders who features a lot of the obscure variety that vaporwave has to offer. https://www.youtube.com/@JasonSanders/videos
>>1111 Checked
>>1111 comfy alignments of same number here. Sometimes I cry listening to runescape斯凱利, don't know exactly why as I never played Old School Runescape. Vaporwave can be a really moving genre as it can sometimes piss me off when trying too hard to mimic the original 80's / 90's vibe. I do enjoy a good vaporwave track but I don't like when they force too much on the nostalgia meme. But overall yes, vaporwave is a comfy genre by itself. Discovered recently some good Korean folk / rock.
>>1117 Please do share some of that Korean folk rock then in your next response! We all want to hear it. I totally agree by the forced nature of some of it. Funny enough the fact someone slowed down the Runescape tracks and added some filters is by definition forced haha. But it's still damn good. I'm not sure how you get the cry feeling when listening to that if you didn't play it? I did as a child and there about 2 of those tracks in that hour long playlist that really hit it on the head and make me think of days gone by. But how does it affect you? Does it just have that "feel" to it that's hard to describe?
>>1117 kk that webm was good. didn't even see you posted it before. still wood be glad to hear some more of what you've got. not even sure where to begin in looking that group up other than copy/pasting but the style is so unique.
>>1119 >cry feeling when listening to that if you didn't play it Hey, I guess it's the power of music. I can be really autistic when it comes to music. >>1121 Discovered it thanks to an anon on /doll/, try this compilation it has some really good tunes on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUXc8vtne9M

>>1185 capsule was part of a scene called early 00s "neo shibuya kei", which occurred after the OG 90s scene (Cornelius, Flipper's Guitar, and Pizzicato Five especially for Capsule) that song specifically is part of a subgenre called "picopop", which is part of the neo scene but was more focused on chiptune and electronic elements, and overly cutesy style you'll have to look into this yourself and listen, because i can't tell you what you like. there are some lists on RYM for instance, literally just google the terms i've mentioned and you'll find plenty of artists Plus Tech Squeeze Box's release CARTOOOM has strangely become quite popular recently, so you might see more discussion of the genre / scene. but it's a lot less chill than this. Serani Poji is another neo group that may appeal to you
>>1186 Damn I had no idea it went this deep, I'm listening to Pizzicato Five and really digging it. Will check out the other stuff you mentioned. Thanks anon!

>>1220 >NieR soundtrack What good taste. Here’s my favourite comfy song from there: https://youtube.com/watch?v=CJHppNnNZL4
>>1221 Comfy as well. I remember having to grind for hours trying to get all the materials to upgrade all the weapons, because my autism demanded it. Not once did I ever tire of any of the songs. The game was comfy central, Junk Heap, Seafront, Facade, The and the Temple all had great themes too. And then the many arrangement albums add even more. https://youtube.com/watch?v=YoLrFxUbgjw https://youtube.com/watch?v=CHmTuffyaEE SoA Hollow Dreams will always be my favorite since it being the reward for a silly quest and its deliberry just utterly quacking set the perfect atmosphere to me.
>>1220 This was the OST that - together with Akiko Shikata - indirectly got me into folkwave and complex layered voice compositions. There’s just something so comfy about the idea that the future is not gleaming chrome and corporate exploitation but rather a kind of gentle pastoral tech-mysticism. I was listening to FREYJA.sys by Kaoling recently. Here’s a version sung by humans rather than Vocaloids, though the Vocaloid version has its own charms too: https://youtu.be/ZoChI5raLxM

>>1258 There's a nice contemplative quality to a lot of his work, even some of the metal stuff. I've heard that the trance-inducing repetitions that he's used so frequently come from his interest in house music.

Les Rallizes Denudes, despite being harsh and underpinned by gentle violence and darkness is top comfy for me. It's like being wrapped in a cocoon of noise, melancholy and soft anger. It fills me with heat as if a massive star is about to explode inside me. Listening to this song on repeat and can't stop crying overwhelmed by its radical beauty.
I often miss the overly offensive era of YouTube. Not like Joji's newer albums are bad, but for my taste they're too dramatic and sad, compared to Pink Season's (and Pink Guy's debut album) constant irony and dark humor. Seeing as YouTube has changed their terms significantly it is likely this kind of content will never return, or at least it won't be as prevalent as it once was. Really sad since most of my favorite guys on YouTube have now either been banned, left or changed entirely, denouncing their passed "edginess". Anyways here's what I like to chill and listen to. A few years back, I got into music stuff and put a thing up on Youtube I ended up working alongside some actual musicians later in my degree and realized I was much better off leaving it to the professionals, but I hope this is counts as sort of homebrew comfy though
>>6401 Also just to stay with thread theme, I really like Jack Stauber's Finite Form https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6m8QOcadBE&list=PLFjud8SQWgMk3Ki5c8AQvX6GDaeX_8IhH&index=2
>>6401 That's cute anon. At least you tried and I hope you've find some pleasure doing. Don't give up on music if it's something that make you happy. Professionals are guys who started as you, doing some shrimple stuff.
>>6401 How long had you been making music for? While it could have used further development, I like the the feeling of that piece. It reminds me of something you'd hear from someone like Hiroshi Yoshimura or Takashi Kokubo in embryonic form. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyJSV9nnt10&t=2003s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGu8xI21VTg Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRHZRV746-8 It's way less tacky than the music I was making when I was just starting out. You seem to have good musical instincts.
>>6410 I think I'd been playing around with LMMS for a month or so before I made that. I'd played keyboards and a few other instruments for a year before that though, so I think I just played around with it and recorded it and I decided it was good enough 😋 I'm bretty sure I was using Spitfire Audio plugins. I've now got a lot of experience of making simulations of real instruments because of my degree - I was considering playing with these and starting up again, so the nice words mean a lot.
>>6413 >I think I'd been playing around with LMMS for a month or so before I made that. Wow, that's much better than I could have done by that point. It's notable that you successfully avoided the almost irresistible newbie pitfall of soaking eberrything in effects. It's so easy to turn a mix into mud if you're not careful. >I'd played keyboards and a few other instruments for a year before that though, so I think I just played around with it and recorded it and I decided it was good enough 😋 That must have really helped. I put off getting a MIDI controller for way too long and was stuck using a mouse and keyboard for coming up with ideas. > I've now got a lot of experience of making simulations of real instruments because of my degree - I was considering playing with these and starting up again, so the nice words mean a lot. It seems like you've got a lot of potential. What's your degree in?
>>6419 I've got a BSc in Physics and soon an MSc in Acoustics
>>6433 Two degrees, eh? Do you plan on going into sound work professionally?
>>6451 Probably not, it's bretty competitive and what jobs there are I think wood probably make me hate audio after a few years, I'm kind of happy just to keep it under my belt as a thing I did that was fun A lot of the things I've learned are cross-transferrable to software engineering and things like that, so that's probably where I'll end up in a few months 😶
>>6457 Also to make sure I don't de-rail the thread, one of my favourite soundtracks (not on YouTube or Spotify for whatever reason) https://m.soundcloud.com/zankyou-no-terror I think it was composed by Yoko Kanno
You don't know how much I love this video
